Blurb:

GETTING SOLD TO THE EMPIRE WAS NEVER PART OF THE PLAN.

Ember lives two very different lives. By day she's a mysterious Roma future-teller, and by night she struggles to care for her sick father. All she wants is the power to control her own life--no arranged marriage, no more poverty. Her future-reading talent is what will get her there.

But when the empire discovers her gift, Ember's life changes forever.

Ember soon finds her innocent talent is far more dangerous than she believed. The empire wants to turn her into a deadly weapon. But Ember has plans of her own, and they don't include living under the empire's control--because even the best weapons can backfire.

My review:

Ember lives in one of the last settlements still on Earth and does future readings to pay for the expensive treatment smuggled to her for her sick father. She doesn’t really have the same aspirations as the other Romani girls and has a hard time really finding her way in life. Sadly, she attracts the attention the Empire and soon founds herself kidnapped and in a war that she doesn’t want to participate in.

I found it really interesting that our heroine, Ember, is Roma. It's the first time I read a book where it’s the case. All the cultural aspects were really illuminating to me but I have to confess that I’m not qualified to judge their accuracy.

Ember being biracial was a problem really concrete for her, she is never really accepted by ‘her people’ but she essentially takes it in strides and even understands why they act the way they do. Although that doesn’t make her want to conform to everything about her people way of life, and I really liked that about her.

Everything in the book was connected to her and I have to confess that I think she takes too much space. The other characters seem barely fleshed out compared to her. Her journey, be it physical or mental, evolves clearly and logically but the other characters, her friend Mar or Stefan really are in her shadow. Even Kane, which we know enough about to hate him, really doesn’t have enough exposure.

Ember’s father, or rather her Dai, as she calls him, is her motivation for most of the book and I am rather disappointed that we know so little about him. And also by the way he never told her the truth about what she was and taught her to control it because that would have prevented a tragedy and maybe... the story wouldn’t have happened lol Well, you know what I mean... Parents which hide things, hoping that it will protect their children are a trope that I don't understand and gets on my nerves, to tell the truth.

The information about the Empire and Union is sparse and I really hope that Ember and us will get to know much more in the following book (books?). Because of this, it’s kinda difficult to really apprehend all the stakes and the scale of this so-called empire, that seems to be all around the universe. This is probably related to the fact that we only know things from Ember, and that she doesn’t really know herself.

The author’s style is fluid, descriptive and dynamic. Everything is easy to picture. The oppressive environment Ember finds her in is really palpable. The way the people seem to have evolved technologically speaking but not really mentally is sadly believable. The human evolution along with the technology and the space conquest aren’t really explained, so I think people who aren’t fond of too much sci-fi babble will like it. Lovers of descriptive explanation of technology and history will probably be disappointed, though.

This book is a very good introduction to a new universe and I really hope the author will explore it more thoroughly in the next one. The characters are interesting even though the heroine really shadows them all, and I’m hoping we’ll get a chance to really get to know them. For those worrying about the sci-fi aspect, it’s not really present, except for some basic technology that we saw in a lot of other shows/books. I’m looking forward to Ember’s next adventures.
